My question has been answered. On the "debut" of Sheryl Swoopes' coming out in ESPN, the Mag, (http://sports.espn.go.com/wnba/news/story?id=2204322) I was sitting here wondering if anyone has noticed the preponderance of hot lesbians in the media lately.
Not pseudo hot lesbians (ala The “L” Word), but women who are hot-looking, hot-in the media, and happen to be lesbians? I am still glassy-eyed from The Advocate’s recent article on the oh-so-delicious Portia de Rossi (although the picture of her and Ellen in Time Magazine a couple of months back made me weak in the knees) and now Sheryl Swoopes is saying, "Being gay has nothing to do with the three gold medals (yes!) or the three MVPs (yes!) or the four championships (yes!) I've won. I'm still the same person. I'm Sheryl."
Oh, I feel faint. Of course, in the privacy of our own homes, we’ll idolize whoever we want. Being gay has nothing to do with being a basketball star… but now my favorite talk show host, favorite Sex in the City actress, favorite sitcom actress, and the Best WNBA basketball player of all time are all lesbians???? Well, that just makes all my daydreams and star crushes… *possible*, you know?
And yes you do know. As I was sitting here wondering it anyone has noticed this trend, the very hostess of this blog IM’d me (with glee, I imagine) to make sure I saw the Swoopes announcement.
It is a good day for us dreamers, yes it is.
One small step for Sheryl, one giant leap for people in the media who are allowed to talk about and express who they honestly are! Hip hip hooray!!!
